Heroic Beijing citizens to be honored for saving drowning kids

Four heroic Beijing citizens, including one who sacrificed his life, are expected to be honored for saving three drowning children in Shijingshan district.

The incident occurred at the Mencheng Lake scenic spot on Sunday afternoon. Three children were swept away by rip currents after accidentally falling into the water while playing near the Yongding River.

Upon hearing cries for help from passers-by, four citizens plunged into the water and rescued the drowning children. Unfortunately, a young man who saved two of the children was too exhausted to save himself.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene after a nearby fire and rescue station received a call at 2:05 p.m. The rescuers, together with members of the Blue Sky Rescue Team, a non-governmental rescue organization, searched for the missing man using underwater detection equipment and other devices.

After around four hours of searching, the man was found dead. The deceased has been named as 32-year-old Zhou Hongbo from Yanqing district.

Officials from the Civil Affairs Bureau of Shijingshan district and other departments visited the site on Monday to carry out investigations. Procedures have been launched to determine whether the deeds of the four citizens meet the standards of "being ready to help others for a just cause. If so, the civil affairs department will honor the lifesavers in accordance with relevant provisions.
